With just six months to go until Bestival’s 5th birthday festivities kick off, Rob da Bank has been up to his old tricks again, gathering even more stunning acts together to add to an already incredible line-up that will guarantee a knockout weekend.
Poking his head round the corner at Bestival’s base Robby shouts:
“It’s such a nail biting experience unleashing our line up to the faithful Besti family but I can honestly say his year’s line up is my favourite so far – underground and experimental business from Aphex Twin to My Bloody Valentine, funky stuff from George Clinton and Jamie Lidell and now we can add new kids on the block Black Kids, Laura Marling and Santogold, techno legends Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig, Bestival veterans of four years out of five and our musical mascots Hot Chip, The Coral with a special acoustic set and the finest female, nay solo, performer out there Amy Winehouse! And it’s amazing to have the mighty Underworld on board, taking their rightful position in a Sunday night headline slot. All that plus an acid brass band, a cockney knees up every night and umm, more toilets!”
Bringing her all conquering, eclectic blend of soul, jazz and RnB to Robin Hill Country Park will be trailblazing chanteuse Amy Winehouse, for what promises to be an electrifying headline set. The first ever British singer to win 5 Grammy awards in one night, Amy’s uniquely powerful and distinctive voice never fails to captivate all that hear it and backed by her band of super-soul sure shots, she will be providing the soundtrack to a typically fun-packed Saturday night.
And we can also reveal hot of the press that Underworld are well and truly back and taking over the Sunday night headliner slot. It was a blistering 2007 for Rick & Karl, having played Hollywood Bowl, Central Park and a sell out UK tour, and their latest new studio album ‘Oblivion With Bells’ has been heralded as their best album since the seminal ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman’.
Making their fourth appearance at Bestival are the heavenly Hot Chip. They will be making good on the main stage with their fully live synth soundscapes, letting loose a delirious set of their trademark pop vibes that come on like the Beach Boys colliding with Kraftwerk at a hip-hop convention.
Bringing some pop panache to proceedings is the original and best Pop Idol, Will Young, who will be playing a special acoustic set on the Bestival Bandstand. Will is not only the record holder for the fastest selling debut single in UK chart history, he is also a massive Bestival fan (he’s attended the last 3 shows). His silky tones have propelled him to international stardom and his Bestival appearance is a rare chance to catch him in intimate surrounds for a Bandstand knees up.
Also joining the bill are legendary Brit Hip-Hoppers and party starters Stereo MCs, The Housemartins and Beautiful South honcho Paul Heaton, plus Rap masters The Sugarhill Gang who’ll be storming the stage for a UK Festival exclusive with their classic Old Skool repertoire. Other highlights include fancy footworkers Chromeo, Bestival favourites the Dub Pistols, indie rock upstarts Black Kids, Drum n Bass God Roni Size and his Reprazent crew, the off-kilter grooves of Santogold, teen singer songwriter Laura Marling, the acclaimed Get Cape.Wear Cape.Fly and Norwegian sensation Ida Maria.
As ever party fun is top of the agenda for Bestival, so there’ll be plenty of hands in the air action with a veritable who’s who of DJs that include Techno gods Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig cut-up kings The Nextmen, House don Joey Negro, party Breaks purveyors Stanton Warriors, ten years of Finger Lickin’ with Soul of Man, the dubby grooves of Jamie Jones, space disco kid Todd Terje, Sunday Best’s own secret weapon Fear of Theydon and even more deckwreckers including BBC Radio 1’s very own Zane Lowe and Annie Nightingale. Also we have the finest purveyors of AV pop mash up in Coldcut and cut n paste maestro DJ Yoda will be joined by beatbox superstar Shlomo on the main stage for a full audio visual spectacular from these field leaders.
With Bestival’s head turning trimmings, fantastic food concessions, fancy dress delights and the best party crowd in the UK, this year’s event is shaping up to be a legendary knees up and the biggest 5th Birthday Party Ever!
