Pendulum
Here at Bestival we’re always eager to start with a bang which is why we can think of no better band to headline the main stage on Friday night than the mighty Pendulum.Since the release of their debut album Hold Your Colour in 2005 Pendulum have gone on to become one of the biggest bands on the planet. Formed in Perth, Australia in 2002 when producers Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen teamed up with acclaimed local DJ Paul ‘El Hornet’ Harding, they drew on a diverse range of influences to become an unstoppable force, managing to singlehandedly conquer the world of drum and bass at their first attempt.
After selling over 100,000 copies of their debut (a huge amount for a drum and bass album) the trio decamped to start work on their second album, this time drawing heavily on their love of rock and metal, this record was a very different animal indeed and gave them what they’d been aiming towards all along, the opportunity to play live.
With the release of In Silico the trio became a five piece and headed out on the road, immediately re-writing the rule book of what was possible in the drum and bass and rock arenas, with both schools instantly embracing them, Pendulum had reinvented themselves to devastating effect with their music storming the charts and their tours selling out in seconds, this was Zeppelin and Metallica combined with the synthetic aggression and sonic purity of the original Pendulum sound, this was quite simply massive.
Released in 2010 their third album Immersion was their most ambitious to date. Epic in scale, with stadium sized riffs Pendulum set their stall out to conquer all comers and succeeded in fine style spending the year touring the world and spreading the word while 2011 promises more new music and of course that coveted headline spot right here at Bestival, the future’s bright, the future’s Pendulum.
