Hi-Tek Soul: starring Kevin Saunderson & Derrick May
For the first time ever these two detroit heavyweights tour together presenting a unique collaborative live performance, six decks, two mixers, drum machine & keyboard.“We’ve got four decks, four CD players, drum machine, keyboard. Derrick’s a little more traditional on vinyl, while I’m on Traktor. It’s a good incorporation of just great music; us vibing off each other. It’s not really planned out, but we’ve got a good ear for music, and together it brings a different type of energy. Hi-Tek Soul is funky, groovy, electronic soul, it doesn’t mean it’s slow or super-fast; it’s just got a pulse that you can feel. It’s definitive to the ear.” (Kevin Saunderson)
Hi-Tek Soul is the legendary club night created by Detroit techno godfather Derrick May as a celebration of the best of electronic music. Its only remit - to ensure that the music is soulful, powerful, real.
May himself is synonymous with the birth of techno in its purest form, inspired by the likes of Yello and Kraftwerk, he began to create a new and exciting form of dance music, something that had never been heard before, recording as Rhythim is Rhythim and Mayday and releasing his output through his own Transmat imprint Derrick May quickly became a superstar, helped in no small way by seminal releases like The Dance, Nude Photo and of course Strings of Life. Over the next three decades he has continued to produce and promote some of the world’s most innovative music, striving to bring soul and enlightenment to dancefloors across the globe.
His presence at Bestival 2011 is all the more special as one of his closest friends, who just happens to be one of the few men who can truly stand side by side with May as an equal in the music stakes, the one and only Kevin Saunderson will be standing alongside him. Probably best known for his work as Inner City, Kevin Saunderson was there at ground zero with May, they went to school together, wrote music together, created some of those first techno cuts together and thirty years later they’re still together and ready to rock our worlds with what promises to be one hell of a show at Bestival 2011.
