Catherine A.D.
Growing up in Aylesbury, the young Catherine Anne Davies stalked the big city from afar. She gorged on literature and grunge guitars in her bedroom and sang along to The Carpenters’ harmonies in the backseat of her parents car before moving to London. There she began to spin her own confessional tales of remorse and retribution atop soaring strings and pianos haunted by a once heavy heart. And that's not to mention that voice, which has been described by Metro as "like a lake of black honey" and as "gorgeous. sick. beautiful" by Courtney Love.Catherine is a self-taught pianist, guitarist, flautist, as well as dabbling with mandolin, banjo, lap steel and accordion and will "try-and-play-anything-once". Never one to do things by halves, she taught herself to write and produce her own material whilst working away on at PhD in queer theory and poetry and holding down a job playing piano at the Hilton (after they agreed she could sing her own material). After three DIY EPs (which she’s been drip-dropping into the world whilst finishing university) her creative force has already found favour at The Sunday Times and with Lauren Laverne, Rob Da Bank and Steve Lamacq, as well as some of America's most influential bloggers. She's been an artist in residence at the Southbank Centre; hand-made thousands of her self-produced ribbon-wrapped EPs; collaborated with Nitin Sawnhey and Riz MC; re-interpreted/remixed songs by Friendly Fires, Hurts and Lady Gaga; recorded with Bernard Butler, Paul Draper (Mansun) and John Kelly (Kate Bush); played shows with the likes of Martha Wainwright, David Gilmour and Jamie Woon, and wooed festival crowds at Latitude and Summer Sundae. All before even releasing her debut album and whilst finishing up her degree.
This spring, Catherine is recording at the legendary Church Studios in London’s Crouch End, putting the finishing touches to a new set of string-laden recordings with producer Liam Howe (Sneaker Pimps, Marina & the Diamonds) to be released in May.
